MILLER SHOULD STICK WITH FENDERLESS CARS

Ah, Robin Miller. The commentator/columnist/reporter for The Indianapolis
Star is at it again..

In his January 1 column, he takes another cheap shot at stock car racing. To
wit: “If ESPN’s expert panel hadn’t put Richard Petty ahead of Mario Andretti
in driver of the century rankings, or the fans hadn’t selected the 1998
Daytona 500 as the best race, I probably could have stayed off my keyboard.
But I cannot sit quietly and let these travesties go unchallenged.”.

He then goes on to pick his list of “best all-around race drivers of the past
50 years.” Needless to say, his ten drivers all have extensive open wheel
backgrounds..

While some of his picks do have NASCAR experience, it’s pretty obvious that
that wasn’t one of his criteria. Apparently to have made his list, you had to
have raced in a “real” sport, i.e., a series where the cars don’t have
fenders..

He says that “you can’t compare guys like Dale Earnhardt, who drove only one
type of race car, with versatile performers like Dan Gurney, who wasn’t afraid
to test his skills in any discipline.” Is that a shot at Earnhardt or what?.

Miller is certainly entitled to his opinion, and his list is just as “valid”
as anyone else’s. But I think it’s time he stopped any pretense of being
objective and let the public know what series he’s in bed with. Hopefully,
once RPM2nite returns to his daily schedule, they’ll stop using him for
NASCAR commentary. He’s biased and it shows.
