Upstate New York Racetrack
As most race fans know, the explosion of NASCAR’s popularity has brought new
racetracks in the country that want race dates. I live in Syracuse, NY which is
not too far away from Watkins Glen. So New York does have a track and we also
have the Pocono track.
But these two tracks are poor facilities to watch a race. The Glen of course
is a road course out in the middle of nowhere. Most fans do not care for road
racing because it is boring. Also you cannot see the entire track. NASCAR has
even taken away the Truck and Busch series away from the track. Pocono is also
boring and way to big. There is not one good seat there. The cars are too far
away on he backstretch and against the wall on the front stretch. The traffic is
a nightmare. It too has no Truck or Busch race. I do not think this track
deserves two dates let alone two that are a month apart. Watkins Glen I think
too will fall by the wayside.
New York actually has a huge racing following which might surprise
Southerners. I think we deserve better. New York is a major state and to think
we do not have a facility to host major racing events is absurd. I am not
suggesting that they built another cookie-cutter track but something that would
host many racing events. They should drop Watkins Glen to add a brand new state
of the art track. It may host a Winston Cup, Busch, and Craftsmen Truck events.
Also it could bring an open wheel race to the region. Even maybe build a 1/4
mile drag strip because there no quality drag strips anywhere in the
state.
The Syracuse area will soon be home of one of the biggest malls in the
country making it a tourist attraction. We offer great accommodations and forms
of entertainment for those race fans who would visit. Like I said New York has a
huge racing following and these events would be sellouts. The saying " If
you build it they will come." certainty applies here.
