OPEN LETTER TO NASCAR
All fans are deeply saddened by the loss of Adam Petty. Our
condolences to the whole Petty family.
I would like to use this space to tell the big wigs of NASCAR
how the fans in this area of the country feel about the state of our favorite sport.
The Corporate GREED is turning the fans off! Now NASCAR wants all
the car sponsors to be the "official" this or that of NASCAR, well we’ve got
Valvoline, Pennzoil, Mobil 1, Texaco, and associate sponsor Quaker State. Let’s see
what we can come up with? The Official Motor oil, The official Synthetic motor oil, The
official long life motor oil, The official ??? You can see our problem. Enough is enough.
We are the most loyal fans in the world. If a corporation sponsors a car in any division
of NASCAR we buy it.
Now on to Racing. Why do you get rewarded for having an ill handling
car? If you’re the last car on the lead lap and your car is running like junk and you
need wholesale changes you get 5 bonus points on the first caution. It just makes sense to
stay out because you get to come behind the pace car and get the luxury of a full lap to
make your changes and five points. My proposal: no bonus points under yellow flag unless
it’s with the checkered flag. If they want those free points let them stay out and
run with old tires and low fuel when the green comes back out!
We need to get rid of the restrictor plates! The teams all
have personnel devoted exclusively to restrictor plate engines. So why not make the
engines more like the street cars, with V-4 engines, lower the compression ratio to 5 to
1, make the greenhouse larger, stand the spoiler up to 90 degrees and make it a foot high
or higher do whatever necessary to get rid of the plates please!
I read a rumor that NASCAR is thinking of redoing the points system,
the current system is very complicated to some fans. Here’s some choices. In proposal
A it ends with 1 point so the owners points can be closer to the same as drivers points
because you wouldn’t get any points for trying to qualify for a race. Top 20’s are
weighted a little heavier than lower finishes with each being 2 points per position more
than the last. Top 10’s increase one extra point to top 3 or podium finisher then the
points really jump making that last lap battle all the more important. Proposal B also
starting at 1 point and increasing by 1 point to top 10. Then increases one extra point
per position. Proposal C starts at an even 100 and decreases 10 points for 2nd
and 1 less point per position to top 10 and then 2 points less to top 25 since the top 25
is so important for provisionals. Then limits the field to an even 40 drivers. Proposal D
limits the field to an even number of 42 cars. Then there is a 1 point jump for each
position to top 25 for provisional importance then 2 points to top 10 and increases 1
extra point up through till the race winner gets 20 extra points because it’s all
about winning. I’m partial to A and D.

A friend at work (Brian Garfield) proposes this next one. Since
hardly anyone makes it on second round qualifying let’s eliminate the first round two days
before the race make it the day before the race. Then you would need to have two cars
ready for qualifying in case you wreck the first one, you can bring out the second one
after everyone else ran their first time. That makes an extra day (Friday), which could be
used as a test day and eliminate testing since we added two more races.
Now for TV, like I eluded to before if it’s on a car we buy it
or shop there. Extended commercials are not necessary lets try something else like
"The next five laps are brought to you by (add sponsors endorsement here)" and
then place their logo on the screen somewhere.
Next how about the "leader picture in picture?" It’s
always on screen so you can show more battles back in the pack and we always get to see
the sponsor of the leader; that’s what they pay for.
Finally to the drivers, most drivers are great, courteous to us fans
and yes some fans go too far. We love that some drivers speak their minds but actions
speak louder than words. I can’t respect someone that kicks a camera man doing his
job or who goes after another driver after they just had a heated argument as the other
driver is walking away. Some drivers are rude to TV reporters just doing their jobs. Yes
we understand getting the same stupid question over and over is frustrating. I propose a
news conference like F-1 does after the race. Have the top 5 drivers and maybe 2 or 3
others who the media request at the news conference and then it televise it after the
race. You could get some corporate sponsors for it. And while we are waiting to get the
news conference together you could run a whole slew of commercials.
Thank you for this forum to let the fans speak out!
