Sofa Sideline – 2003 Predictions – Part 1
My plan was to get this written by year’s end, but a little late is better
than never; well at least in my eyes. There is so much in the mix for next
season, it’s hard to sort through; younger vs. older, driver/crew chief
switches, manufacturer changes. With that in mind, decided to break it down into
a couple of columns; however, with the stipulation that one has the right to
change one’s mind at any given point.
Top Ten
1. Tony Stewart – For the second year in a row, Stewart will steer the Gibbs
team toward the podium in NY (or wherever the fancy party is scheduled). The
switch to Chevy will prove a wise choice and will help this crew where the
Pontiac seemed to falter. Stewart’s tasted victory; now will want it again.
2. Ryan Newman – Will be hot in 2003, win a couple, be consistent; a prelude
to the 2004 Championship.
3. Ricky Rudd – The Wood Brothers team with their renewed enthusiasm, coupled
with adequate financial backing, will propel Rudd to the winner’s circle on more
than one occasion in 2003. The commitment is there; this team is going to make
it happen!
4. Jeff Gordon – Gordon’s personal situation will not be distraction in 2003
and will ways will once again be the order of the day. Key word – focus!
5. Sterling Marlin – "Wildcard" pick for the championship. After
losing out in 2002 due to injuries, Marlin will come back with a vengeance. With
opportunities waning; 2003 could be it!
6. Bobby Labonte – The switch to Chevy will do the trick, Labonte will turn
the corner. As far as McSwain; the jury’s still out on that one.
7. Matt Kenseth – Of all the Roush stars, Kenseth will be the one that shines
brightest. This team has come together, and will keep it together in 2003.
8. Dale Jarrett — The #88 will continue to be in the mix in 2003. Although
he’s not going to gain much from his "new" partner, Jarrett is
focused, in shape, and will suddenly show up out of nowhere on the track. He’s
lean, and will be a "fightin machine."
9. Dale Earnhardt Jr. – Dale Jr. will crack the top ten again; will crack the
win column again; will creep a little closer to the top spot in 2003. He’s got a
good machine and the changes made to the team, will provide the impetus.
10. Dave Blaney – We saw some life from this team on numerous occasions in
the past; this year it’ll all come together. Either that or it will all go away?
Rookie-of-the Year: Greg Biffle
Wild Card for Top Ten: Wallace, Benson, Martin, Johnson
Fall from Pedestal: Kurt Busch
That’s it for now.
