DOVER DOWNS: MOVING ON UP
Any auto-racing enthusiast knows by now that NASCAR is the
fastest growing sport in America. Hundreds of thousands of diehard spectators
assemble week after week in hopes of witnessing their favorite driver cruise
into Victory Circle, while millions of others tuning in via their television
sets. But, are you aware that Dover Downs International Speedway is one of
America’s fastest growing racing venues?
Located in Delaware, Dover Downs Speedway a.k.a. "The
Monster Mile" could easily be a promotional company’s ideal candidate as
to the true popularity of the sport. In its infancy of racing in 1986 Dover’s
Speedway held only 22,000 grandstand seats, but today boasts over 133,000
sold-out seats for both the spring and fall race weekends. Approximately 7,000
more seats will be added at the end of the 2000 season attempting to supply the
ever-growing demand.
Oh, and let’s not overlook the matter of an approximate $40
million dollar economic windfall every time Winston Cup and it’s legion of
fans invade Dover and the surrounding communities.
"We are obviously excited about the growth of Dover
Downs Entertainment over the past few years," said John Dunlap, Director of
Public Relations for the Dover Downs International Speedway. "Not only is
it a sign that the sport is thriving, but that we can bring the kind of quality
facilities and racing action that fans want. The fact that we’ll have over
133,000 race fans, here at Dover Downs for our Winston Cup race is one part of
the success. Add in that we’ll also have a Craftsman Truck Series race on
Friday prior to Winston Cup, then a Busch Series race on Saturday gives you an
idea of how things are moving on up at Dover Downs."
Things moving up for Dover Downs may be an understatement
considering the constant expansion within the Delaware racing complex and
nationwide! Dover Downs Entertainment owns and operates five nationally
recognized racetracks. They also have a large slot machine casino at the
Delaware site along with live harness racing and pari-mutuel wagering, hence the
word entertainment deemed appropriate. And by the time the 2001 racing season is
in full swing, Dover Downs will be opening the doors to a beautiful new luxury
hotel overlooking turn three at the speedway.
The 10-story Dover Downs Hotel and Conference Center will
feature 240 four-star guest rooms, including 12 top floor suites. The ninth
floor Concierge Level will supply the hotel with a gathering place for guests as
they enter the expansive club lounge indulging in a daily continental breakfast
or the hospitality hour in the evening.
The suites and all guest rooms will be beautifully decorated
with a luxurious touch with many rooms actually overlooking the 1-mile concrete
oval racetrack, taking the term "Best Seat in the House" to a whole
new level!
Other features of the hotel will include:
- Three ballrooms ranging in size from 4,400-7,400 square
feet. - Three corporate meeting rooms on the Mezzanine Level
with the largest consisting of over 900 square feet accessible by climbing a
grand staircase leading from the marbled floor of the Lobby area. - A Mezzanine Level state-of-the-art exercise area
including a jacuzzi, sauna, pool, and workout equipment. - 120-guest capacity gourmet restaurant overlooking the
Main Lobby displaying an array of fine wine while dining on gourmet
delights. - The Lobby Bar gives guest a quiet retreat to unwind
from the day’s activities while enjoying their favorite beverage and good
conversation with friends. - A huge 18,000 square foot theater.
- Gift shops.
Amazingly, Dover Downs is firmly involved with yet another
major project simultaneously, the construction of the new Nashville
Superspeedway located in Wilson County, Tennessee.
The giant, $125 million dollar facility is scheduled to open
in April 2001. It is located on approximately 1,200 acres and in addition to the
1.3 mile oval concrete superspeedway; it will be home to a Legends track, a dirt
track, a road course, a drag strip, and a short track. The new superspeedway
will have 14-degree banking in the turns, 9-degree banking on the backstretch,
and 5-degree banking on the frontstretch with speeds reaching in excess of 190
m.p.h. on the backstretch!
"Perhaps our biggest thrill at Dover Downs is the fact
that we are going to have the new Nashville Superspeedway open for business next
spring," said John Dunlap. "That facility will be so state-of-the-art
and will be such an important part of the racing scene, that we hope race fans
in the Nashville area will latch on to it and help make Nashville one of the
important centers for racing in the country. Of course, we also are focusing
energy on our race operations in Memphis, St. Louis, and Long Beach, too."
"All in all," concluded Dunlap, this is a great
time for Dover Downs and we think the next few years will be hugely
exciting."
The fans have indeed "latched on" to the new
superspeedway! Within three weeks, all 18 available luxury suites were snapped
up and the waiting list is growing weekly. The 18 suites each accommodate up to
30 people and the $40,000 price tag seemed irrelevant. The superspeedway is
reserving 6 additional suites to be used by race sponsors in the near future and
due to such high demand, a consideration to double the number of suites is
presently being evaluated.
Local drivers, including Bobby Hamilton, Sterling Marlin, and
Jeff Green were among the attendees at the official unveiling of the new
superspeedway logo in June after a personal tour of the construction site.
Sterling Marlin, NASCAR Winston Cup winner, is very excited
about the future of the track. "A whole lot of race fans live here in
Tennessee and I really look forward to having a great new facility here. Some
tracks we currently run on don’t need two Cup dates and Nashville will
hopefully get one of those races in the future," said Marlin.
Winston Cup driver Bobby Hamilton agreed. "Nashville
should definitely be added somewhere down the line to get a Cup race, it used to
have one and lost it. There’s sure a lot of fans hoping for it too," said
Hamilton.
Apparently, the Indy Racing League concurs that the Nashville
area is prime for expansion into all areas of motorsports. The IRL recently
announced its plans to include Nashville on its schedule for the 2001 season
with an ESPN televised race in July. The open-wheel cars will come roaring into
town reaching track speeds of over 200 m.p.h. while keeping the 40,000+ expected
spectators on the edge of their seats!
The IRL commitment joins three other race events scheduled
for the 2001 inaugural season at the new Tennessee track, including a Busch
Grand National race to kick things off. Also, committed is a NASCAR Craftsman
Truck Series race and an American Speed Association-AC Delco Series.
While Dover Downs Entertainment, ranked 26 out of 100 in
America’s fastest growing small companies, is successfully expanding all
across the nation, the next main event will take place at the home base in
Delaware the weekend of September 22-24. The racetrack, considered one of the
toughest tracks to tame on the racing circuit, Dover Downs will host not only
the Winston Cup MBNA.Com 400, the MBNA.Com 200 Busch race, but will add the MBNA
e-commerce 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series to the weekend extravaganza!
Returning to Dover Downs will be Tony Stewart, Winston Cup
driver of the #20 Home Depot Pontiac, hoping for a carbon copy of the spring
race considering he took home his first win of the season from Dover Downs.
Stewart was the dominant driver on "The Monster Mile" leading 242 of
the 400 laps, making no adjustments all day to his dialed-in Pontiac except air
pressure.
If you were to ask any driver to give you a simple one-word
description of racing at Dover Downs, you are likely to hear the same word
repeated over and over: PHYSICAL.
The high-banked, narrow concrete track takes a physical toll
on the driver, putting pressure on the body the entire race. Some drivers have
described the track as intimidating, able to gobble up cars very quickly!
When the checkered flag drops over the weekend, one can
almost guarantee the drivers, the crews, the sponsors, and the fans will be
ready to GET PHYSICAL at Dover Downs International Speedway!
