DEERE CHAD: Congratulations to Chad Little for getting out from under the Roush umbrella. The #97 and the #16 teams have been second-class teams from day one. Kevin LePage should follow Little’s lead and get out as fast as he can. HEAVENS TO BETSY! A TOBACCO SPONSOR: Surprise. The NASCAR Winston Cup Series is sponsored […]
For 1971 Petty Enterprises faced a situation where the sport now offered more money, but it also offered a bigger technical challenge. The wing cars of 1970 were so severely handicapped by NASCAR as to be essentially unraceable. NASCAR had also implemented restrictor plates for the superspeedway races, with different sized plates for different type […]
Richard and Maurice Petty were young men in their early 20s when Speedweeks 1961 ended. But now they were faced with running a race team. Wrote Richard, "Here’s another place where I was ‘given’ something. I did take over Petty Enterprises…..But what did I have? I had two racecars that were totally destroyed, a Daddy […]
Ned Jarrett tells a heart-warming story about the Petty family. He attended the memorial for Adam, and he wanted to console the Pettys. According to Ned, they wound up consoling him. He thus calls them the strongest family he’s ever met. It confirms a great fact about the Pettys – they can be put down, […]
JUST SIT RIGHT BACK: I believe that after this season, all the tracks with two pit roads will have fixed that problem… or will they? The pit situation at Sears Point is almost worse than that of oval tracks that have a front- and backstretch pit road. Sears Point has the “Gilligan’s Island” pit area […]
The following is a mock news story on the sport, circa 2002, as it ought to be: HEADLINE: ENDING A SEASON TO REMEMBER Looking Back At "NASCAR’s Greatest Season" TALLADEGA, AL – October 27, 2002 – A new record – this is what the Winston 500 at Talladega established for the Winston Cup series. And […]
THAT’S RACING: A few weeks ago, I wrote a piece that criticized Tony Raines for being a "gentleman" about not using the chrome horn to get his first win. I heard from a few people who purported to be connected with his sponsor, who took me to task for it. How dare I suggest that […]
It’s common knowledge that behind any successful man is
usually an exceptional woman. By the same token, behind most talented race car
drivers is a Dad who helped make a little boy’s dream come true.
Dad was the one who generally influenced, molded, and
encouraged their son’s from the go-kart tracks to the elite divisions of NASCAR.
As the nation celebrates Father’s Day this month, what
better tribute to Dad than to hear how these wonderful men played such an
integral part in the success their son’s bask in today.
To the dismay or delight of NASCAR fans
nationwide, it’s nearly impossible to keep up with the seemingly daily changes
in the racing world. Whether this involve the rules, the drivers, the owners, or
simply personal goals, change is inevitable.
SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPETITION: Lap
after lap of two and three-wide side-by-side racing for the top ten spots,
Junior running up front, drafting, just plain exciting racing. Oh, you didn’t
think I was talking about the Winston Cup race at Michigan did you? The
"Junior" I’m talking about is Al Unser, Jr. and the race was at Texas,
not Michigan.
