KENNY IRWIN: Change is Good

Change is in the air.

To the dismay or delight of NASCAR fans
nationwide, it’s nearly impossible to keep up with the seemingly daily changes
in the racing world. Whether this involve the rules, the drivers, the owners, or
simply personal goals, change is inevitable.

ON TV, TEXAS. AND MICHIGAN

SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPETITION: Lap
after lap of two and three-wide side-by-side racing for the top ten spots,
Junior running up front, drafting, just plain exciting racing. Oh, you didn’t
think I was talking about the Winston Cup race at Michigan did you? The
"Junior" I’m talking about is Al Unser, Jr. and the race was at Texas,
not Michigan.

TESTING, RACISM, AND OTHER STUFF

TESTING 1 2 3: Kenny Wallace says they were "narced" out on their test at Michigan, in which his team was "caught" running two cars on the track at the same time.  NASCAR penalized the team by taking one of its tests away. But if you’re a top team, you get to test for free. […]

THE RACE TRACK IS NO PLACE FOR AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

I guess it was only a matter of time. Bobby Norfleet is accusing NASCAR of racism because they wouldn’t let him qualify for last weekend’s truck race at Pike’s Peak. NASCAR’s reason? Lack of experience on a superspeedway. But Norfleet’s black, and NASCAR’s too easy a target. Norfleet failed to qualify at Martinsville on April […]

LIFE’S TOO SHORT

Adam Petty’s death shocked the racing world. There’s no doubt about that. As with other drivers who have died before their time, we’ll never know what would have been. Sterling Marlin: Answering A Few Critics!

Sterling Marlin, the Winston Cup driver of the #40 Coors Light/Team SABCO Chevrolet, has a multi-faceted reputation. Off the racetrack, he’s known for his low-key, caring, and charitable personality, but while on the track, he’s a fierce, competitive racer still eager to win. Unfortunately, a Winston Cup win has eluded Marlin for several years and […]

NASCAR CREATES MORE QUESTIONS THAN IT ANSWERS WITH PENALTY

NASCAR has just announced the penalty on the #12 team for rules infractions at Talladega. Michael Kranefus, owner, will be fined $50,000 and will have 151 owner points taken away, Peter Sospenzo, crew chief, has been suspended until June 6, and Jeremy Mayfield, driver, will have 151 driver points deducted. There was apparently no fine […]

SATURDAY NIGHT’S NOT ALRIGHT FOR RACING

The next two races for the Winston Cup cars take place on Saturday nights. NASCAR is effectively messing in its own nest when it runs races on Saturday night. Hundreds of short tracks around the country just can’t compete with a NASCAR Winston Cup race on Saturday night. NASCAR sanctions the "Weekly Racing Series" (which […]

DOES NASCAR HAVE A “GET OUT OF JAIL FREE” CARD?

A few weeks ago, I wrote about conflicts of interest in racing. Here’s a quote from that article: "Is it really proper for a sanctioning body to own race tracks? Yeah, I know that NASCAR doesn’t technically own any race tracks, but the family that owns NASCAR owns most of the International Speedway Corporation stock. […]
